8 years since the last drupa, 78 years of Horizon... Where has the time gone?

As you know, our focus is on the future—automation, technology, constantly looking ahead. But with all this talk of the future, it’s easy to forget the past, and while it’s important to not always dwell on the past, we need to appreciate the knowledge, experience, and relationships that can only be built over time. Without the past, there would be no future technology, no future automation, and no future Horizon. Looking back to the past can help guide us in the future, and maybe even lead us to new innovations.

This is why we want to take a moment to reflect on the past, and appreciate the experiences and knowledge of those who have contributed to making Horizon what it is today, whether it be one of our valued end users, a dealer, employee, partner, or cherished industry friend. It is because of you that we can continue to innovate, move forward, and serve people in need of finishing equipment all over the world. We want to take the time to extend our sincere thank you and hear your #HistorywithHorizon.

What is a #HistorywithHorizon Story?
What was your first piece of Horizon equipment? How did it change your production? What do you like about it? What about a time when working with your local dealer that you loved, or when something went wrong and you fixed it? An event you attended with Horizon or an experience that was memorable for you?

It is not every day that we get to hear directly from you, our users and partners, and as we have been reflecting here in Japan, we are eager to embrace your stories around the globe in your native tongue. This is the inspiration behind our social media campaign #HistorywithHorizon.

Our #HistorywithHorizon Examples

Eijiro Hori’s #HistorywithHorizon

My name is Eijiro Hori. Some people know me but some may not, so let me briefly introduce myself. Just after I graduated from university in Japan, I studied abroad in California. This decision was made by my father because he wanted me to study English in order to develop a global business. After graduating from business administration, I joined the company to work with my father, soon after I founded Horizon International to export our products in 1981.

1982 was our first drupa, I did the demo and everything myself. We showed three kinds of products at the booth: perfect binder BQ-220, friction collator AC-16 and guillotine cutter PC-64. This served as a good introduction for Horizon and I was successful in meeting many visitors. Some of them became our distributors and are still active business partners. I am grateful to have found such good partners, therefore drupa is very special to me.

As our global business grew, I have made friends with people from many countries. I’ve run marathons in Boston, London and Stockholm with a friend I first met as a distributor. Special thanks to Bob Flinn at Standard Finishing, who taught me the joy of running marathons. Through overseas trade I have gained many friends around the world, all of which I consider to be priceless relationships.
Employee Example #1

A few weeks into my employment at Horizon, @BryanTakano and I came up with the idea to create a social media post centered around cultural differences in the way books are bound between the US and Japan (#justfinishingthings). I went down to the showroom to create examples for the photo. After a few trips back upstairs with no luck, Bryan came downstairs to help. What we thought would be an easy and fun post turned out to be an 8-hour day adjusting settings on the BQ-500 to get it just right. We were both unfamiliar with the style and some of the settings it required.
We were both unfamiliar with the style and some of the settings it required.

I think @YasuoTaketsugu felt left out (or was just wondering where his team disappeared to) because he eventually joined us in the showroom, and the three of us spent the afternoon testing and tweaking every possible setting. It was one of my favorite afternoons here in Takashima so far. One aspect I love about working at Horizon is that, during my training process and employment here, everyone has been so hands-on, and all of our creative ideas have taught me much beyond the basics about our solutions.

In the end, we achieved the perfect bind and gained much more expertise and knowledge than before. Now, I’ll never forget how to make a perfect-bound book with no milling, no cover scoring, and one-step nipping: Japanese Style.

I challenge @YasuoTaketsugu to share your #HistorywithHorizon !

Employee Example #2

My #historywithhorizon may not be very long compared to others, however, joining #teamhorizon has reconnected me with my life-long passion for art and content creation.

Originally, I studied electronic and studio art in college, and even worked as a graphic designer for a few years, but eventually decided to move to Japan. After attending language school and working in the tourism industry for five plus years, I suddenly found myself in Horizon International and completely immersed in an unfamiliar world of machinery and graphic arts, promoting products that I never imagined existed. In order to learn more about Horizon’s expansive portfolio of solutions and what they do, I started from scratch and used them to produce applications.
The RD (our rotary diecutter) is one of my most favorite machines to work with because it gives us a lot of creative freedom for applications while maintaining an incredibly high level of production. For me, the separation area was one of the most difficult areas to understand, but after creating my own holiday cards from scratch and learning to set up the job by myself, I gained the knowledge and confidence needed to properly promote the solution. (Here’s the video I made about the holiday cards:https://youtu.be/xx2zkaLH-nQ?si=ZN7AYRuD99K31mQw )

The everyday opportunities I get to create applications and promotional content for Horizon not only help me gain knowledge about our products, but the graphic arts industry as a whole because finishing is only a piece of the pie and everything is connected.

Look forward to more applications, videos, and content from me in the future (especially at @drupa)! Thanks for introducing me to this world @colin , I challenge you to share a #historywithhorizon

More to come soon
